What is IRATA Certification and Why Does it Matter?

IRATA is the gold standard in rope access safety. Learn what it means and why you should only work with certified technicians.

What is IRATA?

IRATA stands for the Industrial Rope Access Trade Association. Founded in 1987, it's the world's leading authority on rope access, setting the global standard for training, safety, and operational procedures. IRATA certification is recognised internationally as the benchmark for professional rope access work.

IRATA's Safety Record

Over 100 million hours worked with an incident rate of just 0.028 per 100,000 hours – significantly better than the construction industry average.

The Three Levels of IRATA Certification

1

Level 1 – Rope Access Technician

Entry-level certification. Technicians can perform rope access work under supervision. Requires completion of a 4-day training course covering basic rope access techniques, rescue procedures, and safety systems.

2

Level 2 – Rope Access Technician

Intermediate level requiring minimum 1,000 hours of logged rope access work plus additional training. Level 2 technicians can work independently and assist with supervising Level 1 technicians.

3

Level 3 – Rope Access Supervisor

The highest level, requiring minimum 3,000 hours of experience. Level 3 technicians can supervise operations, conduct rescues, prepare work plans, and take responsibility for site safety.

Why IRATA Certification Matters

Proven Safety

IRATA's rigorous training and procedures have resulted in an exemplary safety record across millions of working hours.

Comprehensive Training

Technicians are trained in rope access techniques, rescue procedures, first aid, and site-specific safety requirements.

Global Recognition

IRATA certification is accepted worldwide, with member companies in over 60 countries.

Regular Auditing

IRATA member companies undergo regular audits to ensure ongoing compliance with safety standards.

Always Check Certification

Before hiring any rope access contractor, verify their IRATA membership and ask to see current certification cards for all technicians who will work on your project. Certifications must be renewed every 3 years.
